Studies have confirmed hawthorn's ability to improve the efficiency of the heart by improving blood flow to and from the heart. Hawthorn improves the contraction of heart muscle, slows progression of heart disease, enhances circulation to the extremities, prevents constriction of the blood vessels, and is a potent antioxidant. In a study of 38 patients with early stage congestive heart failure, exercise tolerance & endurance improved for those taking Hawthorn vs. placebo. Shortness of breath & post-exercise fatigue also lessened for the patients on Hawthorn. In another study, 60 angina patients were given hawthorn or a placebo. Those on hawthorn were able to exercise for longer without having an angina pain. Upon testing, hawthorn subjects were found to have improved blood and oxygen to the heart.
